Introduces Solarban® 70XL Glass to Residential Market
PPG Industries has announced that Solarban® 70XL glass, a new
solar control low-e glass with a clear, color-neutral aesthetic,
is now available to residential window and door manufacturers.
In a standard ¾-inch clear insulating glass unit, Solarban
70XL glass provides a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27
and Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) of 64%. This exceptional combination
of performance characteristics allows homeowners to reap the benefits
of abundant sunlight and the energy saving performance of high-performance
solar control low-e glasses.
With windows fabricated from Solarban 70XL glass, the amount of
summer heat that enters the home is greatly reduced. Consequently,
homeowners can cut their summer cooling cost by as much as 25 percent
compared to windows fabricated with insulating glass units made
with clear glass.
Solarban 70XL glass also keeps homes warmer in the winter with a
U-Value (insulating value) of 0.24, which is almost 47 percent better
than standard clear insulating glass. That means less work for the
furnace and lower energy bills in the winter, as well as less condensation
and window frost.
In addition to these significant energy savings, Solarban 70XL glass
also decreases the amount of fabric- and carpet-fading ultraviolet
(UV) light that is transmitted into the home. In fact, testing shows
that windows made with Solarban 70XL glass block UV energy 90 percent
more effectively than windows made with a standard clear insulating
glass unit.
While Solarban 70XL glass is new to residential window and door
manufacturers, the product is already a proven success in the commercial
construction market since its first shipment during the summer of
2005. Testing has shown that buildings glazed with Solarban 70XL
glass can, depending on their size, window type and geographic location,
reduce initial investment in HVAC equipment by as much as 26 percent
compared to other leading solar control low-e glasses. This reduced
energy usage yields additional benefits once the building is occupied
with on-going energy savings of 3 to 5 percent annually.
