The North Maine Fire Protection District, in Maine Township,
Ill., a suburban area northwest of Chicago, has adopted several
codes from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) for use
as part of the district's fire prevention codes. The county chose
to use the 2003 editions of NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code (UFC), NFPA
101, Life Safety Code and the 2002 editions of NFPA 72, National
Fire Alarm Code and NFPA 13, Standard for Installation of Sprinkler
Systems. A chapter from NFPA 5000, Building Construction and Safety
Code, was also chosen. The new codes became effective on August
19, 2004.
"The safety of our citizens is our biggest priority and
we feel that these codes are the best choice to ensure that safety,"
said Arnold Witzke, the district's fire marshal. "NFPA codes
are the most comprehensive available and the newly adopted codes
will do the most to protect our community."
