506-06 Addresses Hurricane Impact Testing
A key document for assisting architects and specifiers in the development of
hurricane resistance specifications for fenestration products has been revised
by AAMA, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association. Originally published
in 2000, the updated document is AAMA 506-06, "Voluntary Specifications for
Hurricane Impact and Cycle Testing of Fenestration Products."
The document outlines a testing system for rating the ability of windows, doors,
skylights, storefronts, sliding doors and curtain walls to withstand impact and
pressure cycling generally associated with hurricane conditions. "Specifications
are based on initial qualification through one of the gateway documents referenced
in the publication and on testing guidelines, which have been established by ASTM,"
according to Larry Livermore, AAMA Technical Standards Manager.
The AAMA 506-06 is available through download, CD or paper copy at a cost of
$8.00 for non-members and $4.00 for members.
