Visitors Step Out Onto Chicago's New Ledge
July 6, 2009
The Ledge, a series of glass bays that extend from Chicago's Sears
Tower's 103rd floor, opened to visitors last week. The Ledge reaches
out more than 4 feet from Skydeck Chicago's west side, giving visitors
unobstructed views of the city 1,353 feet straight down.
Chicago-based MTH Industries served as the contract glazier. Each
glass box is comprised of three layers of glass laminated into one
seamless unit. The low-iron, clear glass is fully tempered and heat-soaked
for durability. The glass panels weigh 1,500 pounds.
