USGNN Original StoryRandy Johnson Passes Away

Randy Johnson, of Johnson Sales in Long Lake, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2007, from pancreatic cancer.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in 1967 from the School of Forestry, Oregon State University. In 1969 he earned his MBA from University of Minnesota. He entered the glass industry with Harmon Glass, where he assisted in the acquisition of Hiawatha Glass. Johnson went on to serve as the vice president of sales with Viracon. He founded Northland Glass in 1978, and then sold that company to Hordis Bros. to found Johnson Sales.

During his tenure with Northland Glass, Johnson served as president of the Sealed Insulated Glass Manufacturers Associations (SIGMA). A longstanding member of the Minnesota Glass Association (MGA)-and a board member for the last three years-Johnson was recognized at MGA's 2007 Midwest Glass Conference with the creation of a special Leadership Award.

"Randy Johnson worked in the glass industry as a sales representative for a number of years. Calling him a sales representative falls far short of describing him," says Mike Schmaltz, executive director of MGA. "Randy became a friend and trusted advisor to his customers and worked hard to improve the industry. He consulted with his customers as they dealt with change and troubles, helping them emerge successfully. He sponsored countless fishing and hunting trips, golf outings, huge pork chop cookouts, etc., all of which led to better relations within the industry. He demonstrated leadership through involvement in trade associations such as the MGA, always there with innovative ideas and time. We will truly miss him."

A memorial service for Johnson will be held January 7 at the Holy Name of Jesus church in Wayzata, Minn. The church will be open at 5 p.m. for visitation and the service will follow at 6 p.m. Following the memorial service there will be a social gathering at The Reserve in Plymouth, Minn., beginning at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Pheasants Forever or Caringbridge.org.
