NFRC’s Board Approves Action Items
July 23, 2010

The National Fenestration Rating Council’s (NFRC) board of directors approved several items at the end of the council’s first-ever virtual meeting held this week.

The Research and Technology Committee brought forth several items to the board. The board passed unanimously motions to extend the WINDOW 6/THERM 6 validation research project deadline, as well as the deadline for the complex VT ratings research project, until the Fall 2010 Membership Meeting, November 8-11 in San Francisco. The committee also passed a motion to approve the ventilating rating task group scope, which is to create a NFRC ventilation rating system utilizing net clear opening less a screen factor. The process for developing the rating will be in three phases.

Jeff Baker of WESTLab reported for the Technical Committee reported that its Attachment Subcommittee returned ballots on NFRC 100a and NFRC 200a back to their respective task groups for additional work after “robust” discussion of the multiple negatives returned. Baker also received approval to create a presentation, likely to be held as a webinar, explaining to the membership and industry at large how attachments are rated.

According to Mike Cienian of Hunter Douglas, “There’s 30 years worth of history of how the testing has been done, so we would put an overview together that would help the window and glazing community understand.”

The presentation is intended to help smooth the way for the documents’ next ballot before the fall meeting.

The Condensation Resistance Subcommittee noted that it is preparing a presentation for the fall meeting. Charlie Curcija of CARLI Inc. is expected to present information on the CMA condensation resistance study.

The Solar Heat Gain Subcommittee’s motions to approve NFRC 200 Garage Door ballot and NFRC 200 section 4.5G Laminates ballot both were approved. CLICK HERE to read related article.

The Software Subcommittee had its motion approved as well, allowing interim approval of the WINDOW 6/THERM 6 version 6.3 software, in accordance with certain stipulations set out by the subcommittee, prior to it taking full effect January 1. CLICK HERE for related story.

The U-Factor Subcommittee approved changes to the NFRC 100 Garage Door document with approval of its ballot, as well as approval of the NFRC 100 Table 4-3 Wall and Sloped Glazing ballot.

In response to a question during the Q&A session, the group did note that it is aware its spring 2011 membership meeting currently conflicts with the Glass Association of North America’s Building Envelope Contractors Conference (BEC) in March. NFRC is considering holding its meeting in Las Vegas alongside the BEC event to allow interested professionals to participate in both events.
