Architectural Congress to be Held at glasstec
August 10, 2012

This year's glasstec will feature an Architectural Congress focused on "Appearances + Perspectives" to be held on October 24, 2012. glasstec will take place October 23 - 26, 2012 at the fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The session, organized by the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia (AKNW), the Technical University of Delft and Ostwestfalen-Lippe University, several speakers will introduce their projects relating to the creative use of glass in the building shell. The focus will be on issues concerning the design of buildings within the context of the current sustainability and energy consumption discussion, as well as on the future value of aesthetics in buildings.

"With a view to sustainable construction, glass is a very important material, and this applies not only to the energy balance of a building," says Professor Ulrich Knaack of the Technical University Delft/Ostwestfalen-Lippe University, who will moderate the congress. "Technological progress opens up more and more opportunities for creative and aesthetic use of this material for architects and designers."

The list of presenters includes several architects, including Enrique Sobejano and Fuensanta Nieto of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, who will address "The Identity of Spaces;" Thomas Auer of Transsolar, who will discuss "Climate Design and Architecture;" Kai-Uwe Bergmann of BIG, who will address "Hedonistic Sustainability;" and Brendan Macfarlane of Jakob + Macfarlane, whose session will be titled "The Freedom of Shape."

"Windows and mirrors are metaphors that George Steiner linked to the perception of the exterior world - objective - and to the thoughts on the interior world - subjective," says Sobejano. "Both images, which strangely coincide in a same material - clear or reflective glass - become for us a representation of the limit and the combinatorial thinking, architectural concepts that reflect the specificity and multiplicity that form the basis of every project."

The Architectural Congress will be held at the Congress Center East at the Düsseldorf fairgrounds on October 24, starting at 9 am. At 2:30 p.m., a guided tour of the glasstec Special Show "glass technology live" will be offered, presenting future-oriented glass products and applications in an architectural context. The conference will be provided in both English and German with simultaneous translation.
